24 hours in Johannesburg: Dinner at Marble

To kick off my 24 hours in Johannesburg blog series, we’ll be stopping for dinner at Marble, one of JHB’s most hotly tipped restaurants.

It is impossible to ignore the digital buzz surrounding star chef David Higgs and his latest culinary venture, which is located on a trendy rooftop in the budding food hub of Rosebank.

Why the fuss? Marble celebrates the South African timeworn ritual of cooking on open wood fires with an imported grill from Michigan serving as the focal point to the restaurant.

The restaurant and adjoining bar share incredible views of the city while the interior design is sleek and modern with statement flower arrangements, marble finishing and feature wall installations by the local artists of the Keyes Art Mile.

Having moved from the bar to the restaurant which is cleverly divided by a glass encased wine cellar, we swiftly ordered a couple of cocktails before perusing the food and wine menus.

On arrival to your table, there’s warm flatbread with a pumpkin purée to nibble on while the waiter takes you through the various menu options.

We had the Marble Bites to start with, a platter of lamb rolls, kimchi chicken thighs and pork tacos (two of each, none of this awkward three piece business!) all of which were insanely tasty – especially the chicken!

For our mains, G ordered the rib-eye which came with a tasty bean stew and soft mash potato – cooked to perfection over the wood fire – and I had the flamed mussels in a coconut and lemongrass sauce topped with fennel-infused focaccia bread.

Taryn, the sommelier, really pulled through with her excellent recommendation of a Western Cape Grenache to compliment both red meat and seafood.

Not only is this restaurant worthy of the ‘gram, its seasonally changing menu is carefully thought out with the locals passion for flamed grilled food at the very core of its ethos.

I may be bias but South Africa really does offer some of the best dining experiences out there, the care and attention that goes into the service and food preparation is way beyond most places I’ve visited in the world.

If you’re looking to venture further south, have a read of my posts on Western Cape adventures at La Petite Ferme and Delaire Graff.

To finish the evening off, we retired to the terrace for a nightcap in the cool temperature.
